"I'm not the most design oriented and don't have enough to hire someone to help me. Used this app to take a pic of my space and get a bunch of ideas in different styles. It even gave me specific pieces I could buy that were in the images. Really impressed and happy to finally be turning my blah living room into something I love"

    Before and After

    Real living rooms, redesigned.

Drag the slider to see how Framehouse transforms a tired living room into a layered, intentional home.

Look closely and you will notice the moves a working designer makes by instinct. The sofa is pulled a few inches off the wall so the room can breathe. A single large rug slips under the front legs of the seating and quietly zones the lounge area away from the rest of the home. The palette stays disciplined, usually two warm neutrals and one accent, so the room reads as one composition instead of five competing ideas. One sculptural floor lamp does the heavy lifting visually, the side tables stay quiet, and the sightline from the entry to the furthest window remains clear. These are the same decisions Framehouse applies to a photo of your living room in seconds.

    Common Living Room Scenarios

Every living room is a different problem.

A small rental, a long prewar parlor, and a wide open-plan great room each demand a different set of decisions. Framehouse reads the room you actually have and proposes plans trained on the closest comparable spaces.

    Compact, considered

Small living rooms under 200 sq ft

In a small living room, restraint is the design. Float the sofa a few inches off the wall, anchor the seating with a single generous rug, and keep one bold piece per sightline. A tightly edited palette of two warm neutrals and one accent will make the room read as intentional, not crowded.

    Two zones, one home

    Open-concept living and dining

In an open plan, the rug is the floor plan. A larger rug under the seating tells the eye where the lounge ends, and a runner or second rug zones the dining area without a single wall. Repeat one finish across both sides, oak, brass, or blackened steel, so the home reads as one composition.

    Break the bowling alley

    Long, narrow living rooms

Long, narrow rooms fail when treated as a single zone. Split them into two: a primary seating group around a rug, then a reading chair or console at the far end. A bench or console pulled across the width divides the space without a wall and gives the eye somewhere to land.

    Architecture wins

Living rooms with a fireplace and TV

The hearth always wins the room because it is architecture, not a screen. Orient the sofa toward the fireplace. Mount the television above the mantel only if the viewing height is comfortable. If it is not, move it to a perpendicular wall on a low credenza so the room stops competing with itself.

    Layout and Furniture

The three decisions that change everything.

A living room lives or dies on a handful of choices. Get these right and the rest is decoration.

Pull the sofa off the wall

Even six inches of breathing room behind the sofa transforms a living room from rental-grade to designed. Add a slim console table behind it for a pair of lamps, a stack of books, and a low piece of sculpture, and you have built a second piece of architecture out of one piece of furniture. The room gains a back wall, a light layer, and a sense that it was composed rather than assembled.

The rug is the floor plan

Buy the largest rug your budget allows. In a living room, that almost always means 8x10 or 9x12. All four legs of the sofa should sit on the rug, or at minimum the two front legs and the front legs of the flanking chairs. A rug that floats island-style in the middle of the room shrinks the space and erases the seating zone. A generous rug is the single fastest way to make a living room look composed.

Light the room at three heights

One overhead fixture flattens any living room. Layer the light at three heights instead. An overhead pendant or recessed cans for the base, a floor lamp by the reading chair and a pair of table lamps on the console for eye level, and sconces or a low candle on the coffee table for the bottom layer. Put everything on dimmers. A living room that can drop to 30 percent at night is a living room that actually gets used.

    A Few of Our Favorites

    Five living-room directions we love.

These are five of the hundred-plus directions Framehouse can generate for a living room. Each is tuned to a real space, where palette discipline and a single statement piece carry the room.

    Quiet Modern

Pale oak floors, a low bouclé sofa, a single black accent line. The discipline of Japanese minimalism warmed by French restraint. Reads expensive in almost any living room.

    Brownstone Library

Built-in shelving painted deep green, brass picture lights over framed art, a leather chesterfield. Best for prewar rooms with original moldings that deserve to be played against.

    Coastal Restraint

Limewashed walls, raw linen drapery, one rattan piece, and one navy accent. Coastal without the cliché. Lets a single great window do most of the design work.

    Collected Gallery

Salon-style hang above a low velvet sofa, a tall fiddle leaf in the corner, layered rugs underfoot. Turns a living room into a small museum without crowding the seating.

    Warm Minimal

Cream walls, a walnut credenza, a single terracotta floor lamp, and an oversized linen lampshade overhead. The simplest direction we offer, and quietly the most expensive looking.
