Before and After

## Real kitchens, redesigned.

Drag the slider to see how Framehouse transforms a tired kitchen into a layered, intentional cook's space.

Look closely and you will notice the moves a working kitchen designer makes by instinct. The work triangle between sink, stove, and fridge stays tight, so cooking actually flows. One material gets to be the hero, usually the backsplash or the island stone, while the cabinetry quietly recedes in a soft warm white or a deep moody green. Hardware is unified across every drawer and door so the room reads as one composition instead of a parts catalog. Light is layered at three levels: pendants over the island, strips under the uppers, and a dimmable ambient layer overhead. These are the same decisions Framehouse applies to a photo of your kitchen in seconds.

Common Kitchen Scenarios

## Every kitchen is a different problem.

A tight galley, an open-plan great room, and a prewar kitchen with original moldings each demand a different set of decisions. Framehouse reads the room you actually have and proposes plans trained on the closest comparable spaces.

Tight footprint, real cooking

### Small or galley kitchens under 120 sq ft

In a galley, every inch is a decision. Keep the work triangle inside a single arc, use light cabinetry up top with a darker base, and reserve the one bold material, marble, soapstone, zellige, for the backsplash. A single under-cabinet light strip on a dimmer reads as warm and considered instead of utilitarian.

One room, two purposes

### Open-concept kitchen and living rooms

When the kitchen opens to the living room, the island is the wall. Treat its back side as furniture, paneled, painted, or wrapped in stone, so it reads from the sofa. Repeat one finish across both zones, oak, brass, or blackened steel, and the open plan finally feels like one home instead of two stitched together.

The room's center of gravity

### Kitchens with an island or peninsula

The island is where the room is composed. Anchor it with two or three pendants at consistent height, allow 42 to 48 inches of clearance on every active side, and give the island a contrasting finish from the perimeter cabinets so it earns its place. A waterfall edge or a contrasting stone slab makes the island read as architecture, not just storage.

Respect the bones

### Kitchens in older or prewar homes

Prewar kitchens have moldings, plaster, and quirks worth keeping. Choose inset shaker cabinetry, unlacquered brass that will patina, and a soft cream or warm off-white for the walls. Avoid the all-white renovation cliché. A vintage runner, an exposed plaster wall, and one piece of furniture-style cabinetry let the room belong to the building.

Layout and Cabinetry

## The three decisions that change everything.

A kitchen lives or dies on a handful of choices. Get these right and the rest is finishing.

### Respect the work triangle

The relationship between sink, stove, and refrigerator is the spine of every functional kitchen. Keep each leg between 4 and 9 feet, and never let a major traffic path cut through it. A galley layout is the most efficient arrangement ever designed for cooking, but an L-shape with an island works almost as well when the island is the prep station. Get the triangle right first, then style the room around it.

### Treat the backsplash as the jewelry

A kitchen needs exactly one visual moment. Most of the time, that is the backsplash. Run a single bold material, honed marble, zellige, glazed brick, soapstone, from countertop to underside of the uppers, or all the way to the ceiling behind the range. Keep the cabinetry quiet in a soft warm white, deep green, or muted clay, and let the backsplash do the talking. Two competing heroes never read as designed.

### Light the kitchen at three levels

One ceiling fixture is not lighting, it is a flashlight. Layer three sources instead. Task lighting under the upper cabinets at roughly 2700K casts an even glow on the counter where you actually chop. A pair or trio of pendants over the island sets the eye level and announces the room. A dimmable ambient layer overhead, recessed cans or a soft flush mount, handles the rest. Put everything on dimmers. A kitchen that can drop to candlelight at the end of dinner is a kitchen that gets lived in.

A Few of Our Favorites

## Five kitchen directions we love.

These are five of the hundred-plus directions Framehouse can generate for a kitchen. Each is tuned to a real space, where one hero material and disciplined cabinetry carry the room.

### Quiet Shaker

Inset shaker cabinets in warm white, unlacquered brass knobs, honed marble counters, and a single oak floating shelf. The most universally flattering kitchen direction we offer, and quietly the most expensive looking.

### Industrial Brass

Blackened steel windows, soapstone counters, exposed brick, and warm brass pendants over the island. Best for lofts and converted spaces where the bones already do half the work.

### Warm Mediterranean

Plaster range hood, glazed zellige backsplash, terracotta floors, and a single arched doorway. A kitchen that feels like a long lunch in Mallorca, even in a Brooklyn brownstone.

### Japandi Kitchen

Pale oak cabinetry with no visible hardware, integrated appliances, a single black stone counter, and one paper pendant. Restraint as the design. Reads calm in any size footprint.

### Coastal White

Beadboard island, polished nickel hardware, marble counters, and rattan counter stools. Coastal without the cliché. Lets one great window over the sink do most of the design work.
